Jewelry Designer Spotlight: Margot Wolf

I first met Margot Wolf at this year’s Austin Fashion Awards while I was snapping street style photos. I noticed the chunky bohemian-style rings and long chained necklaces her and her friend were wearing and soon after found out they were her own creations!
I fell in love with Margot’s bold and simplistic designs, and knew I just had to do a spotlight on her to spread the word about her amazing hand-crafted creations.

How/when did you start making jewelry and why did you start making it?
I love wearing jewelry and adorning my hands and body - which is why I love making it so much! I strive to create unique designs that are versatile and comfortable enough to be worn every day!
I have been diligently devoted to the jewelry making craft for about 6 years. I have put in many, many hours, and learned tons of lessons, in an attempt to understand the vast science of jewelry making. I have been committed to perfecting my skills in an effort to produce exquisite, high-end quality jewelry. I strive to design jewelry that is eye-catching yet simple enough to wear with anything. Jewelry that enhances the wearer and feels good when worn! Needless to say, a lot of love goes into each piece - everything is made-to-order with my own two hands.

What is the inspiration behind your pieces?
Inspiration comes from everywhere – often in the tiniest of things. I have had lots of fun finding pretty, natural specimens and preserving them through the casting process. By turning them into metal, they become little wearable sculptures that represent the natural beauty of Mother Nature and of things left untouched. Organic matter in its pure and honest form.
Inspiration can also sometimes sneak up when least expecting and move my designs in a completely different direction – like with the Chevron necklace, which came to fruition from a mindless doodle of bows and arrows.
But mainly my biggest passion comes from a desire to create jewelry that does more than adorn the body. I strive to make creations that move and inspire. Jewelry that makes you feel sexy and wanna love life!

What types of styles and trends do you like in the jewelry world right now?
I have noticed more and more designers incorporating texture into their collections thru the use of mixed materials. Many of these styles have this infectious, carefree nature that turns the jewelry into big, bold statement pieces. Lots of shabby-chic, bohemian influences, and specifically bold, chunky ring designs – which are my absolute favorite.

Which materials are in most of your pieces/which materials do you like working with best?
Most of my jewelry is fabricated in Sterling and Bronze, and recently I’ve incorporated more Copper. I have been experimenting with mixing metals and colors! I love the rich contrast of Copper and Silver, or blackened metal with 14k Gold Vermeil. There is so much variety! I have also been experimenting with traditional Japanese metal alloys and methods of metalworking. “Shakudō” metal is a mixture of 24 karat gold and copper – eventually, as it’s worn, it oxidizes this deep, gorgeous purple-black color that just has so much soul. I am slowly incorporating it more and more into my designs – but in small doses because it’s expensive!

What are some things people can look forward to seeing in your line next?
Again, more Japanese metal alloys/ techniques, as well as incorporating more faceted stones. I have a few designs I am still working on that will be accentuated with black diamonds or colored sapphires. So pretty!
I also really love chain – textured, layered, oxidized, in every which way. I will continue to experiment with different designs incorporating beautiful chains in unique ways!
