Marie Claire’s Front Row College Challenge

Last night at the Mohawk, local fashion blogger and UT Chemical Engineering Student, Diya Liu, presented her styled looks in a fashion show for the Marie Claire Front Row College Challenge.  Liu was one of four stylish girls picked from across the United States to participate in this styling challenge for a chance to win a summer internship with Marie Claire and LOFT.

The fashion show was very well put together and executed.  It featured opening remarks from Marie Claire’s Senior Fashion Editor, Zanna Roberts Rassi as well as gift bags with goodies from Marie Claire, Rimmel, and LOFT.  Out of the four challenge contestants, Liu was also the only one to use signed models and professional hair and make-up artists for her show.

I am a HUGE fan of Liu’s personal style which she showcases on her blog, In Her Stilettos.  Her accessorizing prowess and trendy feminine wardrobe would make any girl jealous. That being said, I was not the biggest fan of the clothing presented in the fashion show last night.  As a part of the challenge, the finalists had to put together looks using only pieces from LOFT.  Liu did a pretty good job of putting together looks with what she had to work with, but when you try and combine clothing meant for older, working, on-the-go women with a 20-something’s sense of style, something seems a bit amiss.  I love layering clothing and jewelry, mix and matching different patterns and adding bold accent colors and pieces to spice up an outfit, but the outfits presented at the show seemed to be a little forced to me.

In my opinion, the challenge was just a way for LOFT to try to reach out and gain a younger college age clientele without actually designing pieces that had a more young and hip silohuette.  I hope that Liu wins so she can lend them some of her perspective on being a young and incredibly stylish girl.
